Hi, I'm Ayano!I’m a PhD candidate in the Second Language Studies department at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM). I LOVE teaching English and am eager to explore effective teaching approaches. Let me share my experience that has shaped my development as an English teacher:
I started my English teaching career at Tokyo Metropolitan public high school. I loved my students and job so much, but at the same time, I was frustrated with my country's outdated way of teaching English based on translation and memorization. I always thought, “I have to be the one to make a change in my country’s English education.” This passion motivated me to earn a TEFL certificate at the University of California, Irvine and to further pursue an MA in TESOL at Teachers College (TC), Columbia University as a Fulbright scholar. I presented my research and teaching tips at various conferences including American Association for Applied Linguistics, TESOL International, as well as NYS TESOL. Further, as chair of the student-run AL/TESOL Roundtable, I organized Research & Pedagogy Forums to facilitate academic discussions. While at TC, I taught Integrated skills to adult ESL learners with various cultural backgrounds to try out new teaching techniques learned from the MA program. After graduating from TC, I worked as a Japanese high school teacher as well as an international university lecturer. At the high school, I have held teacher-training workshops on the implementation of Flipped Learning and conducted classroom research investigating its efficacy. As a university lecturer, I have provided content-based instruction to advanced English learners to help them acquire academic skills. As described, I have dedicated myself to English teaching and learning throughout my career and would love to continue doing so for the rest of my life. My motto is to take as many opportunities as possible in order to enhance my knowledge and skills about English teaching. In my free time, I love playing the piano and oboe, enjoying coffee at my favorite cafes, and watching American sitcoms and Disney movies
